Education Alliance partners with Big Brothers Big Sisters Waco to transform tutoring program at J.H. Hines into Mentoring Program

2 students from the Hines Mentoring Program

The Education Alliance piloted a Best Practices Reading Program in 2009 at J.H. Hines, pairing tutors with students who performed guided reading to them twice a week and tracking the progress. After analyzing the progress, the Education Alliance believes that the impact of mentoring may be more effective in a student’s life than tutoring.

For this reason, we would like to announce that the program is being transformed into a Mentoring Program, with coordination by Big Brothers Big Sisters Waco.

There are over 50 students at J.H. Hines who have been identified and would greatly benefit from mentoring services.

If you’re interested in becoming a mentor at J.H. Hines and impacting a child’s life, contact Lisa Robertson, Regional Executive Director for Big Brothers Big Sisters Waco, at lrobertson@bbbstx.org. As a “Big” you will be matched with a “Little” and spend one hour once a week on campus with he or she.

If you would like to learn more about how the Big Brothers Big Sisters Program works, find out more at http://bbbswaco.blogspot.com/

Research shows that children who are mentored are less likely to skip class and begin using illegal drugs. They also have more confidence in school and better relationships with their families. Let’s help provide those positive influences in the lives of Waco youth!
